Elias Kade is the kind of man who makes lists before he opens doors. He surveys planets for a living — he goes first, measures everything, and files accurate reports. On the planet catalogued as GJ 514c, he lands three kilometers from a set of ruins, walks to them in the low afternoon light, and begins measuring.
The doorways are two meters, four centimeters tall. Standard clearance. Every one of them.

Quiet Horizons. Episode 10. The Proportions. Elias Cade is the kind of man who makes lists before he opens doors. Before he left the lander, he made four of them atmosphere, terrain, fauna, structural integrity. He works through them in order. He always works through them in order. This is why survey teams send him first. The planet is designated GJ514C in the catalogue and nothing else. Someone on the Discovery team called it Marin in their field notes, and the name spread through the mission logs the way informal names do, quietly and without authorization, until everyone uses it and no one remembers deciding to. Elias uses the catalogue number in his reports. In his head, when he is not writing reports, he uses Marin. The lander set down in a flat basin three kilometers from the ruins. He chose the distance deliberately, close enough to reach on foot, far enough that the engine wash would not disturb whatever was there. This is standard procedure for sites of unknown origin. He wrote it into the approach protocol himself four years ago after a different survey team on a different planet landed directly on top of something fragile and spent the next six months explaining why. He finishes the suit checklist at the top of the ramp. Oxygen flow, nominal. Pressure seal, nominal, comlink nominal. The external readout shows the atmosphere at 1.1 standard pressure, 18% oxygen, the rest nitrogen and trace gases with some particulate content that the filters can handle. Breathable in an emergency. Not breathable by choice. He has never made that choice and does not intend to start on a first survey. He walks down the ramp and onto marin. The ground is the colour of old clay, reddish brown, slightly darker where the basin collects moisture. The vegetation, if that is the right word for it, grows in low dense mats near the basin edge, something like moss, something like lichen, purple-green in the particular light of this sun, which sits lower in the sky than Earth's and runs a few degrees cooler and gives everything a quality like late afternoon, even at midday. His shadow is long. He stands for a moment and lets the suit sensors do their atmospheric readings, watching the light move across the basin floor. It is very quiet, not silent. There is wind, and the wind moves through the mat growth and makes a sound like paper, but quiet in the way that places are quiet when nothing in them has ever heard a human voice before. He begins walking toward the ruins. The catalogue entry based on the orbital survey said stone structures, approximately forty in number, arranged in a roughly ovoid pattern covering four hectares. Weathering consistent with three to five hundred years of exposure. No metallic signature, no synthetic materials detected from orbit, no biological activity within the site boundary. He read the entry 17 times on the transit from the relay station. He finds that reading things many times does not prepare you for them. It only means you arrive with detailed expectations that the thing then fails to meet in ways you could not have predicted. The first thing he notices, coming over the low ridge at the basin's north edge, is that the ruins are smaller than he expected. Not small, the structures are substantial, the largest may be eight meters across, but in the orbital imagery they read as imposing. In person they are quiet, they sit in the red clay ground, the way stones sit in ground that has settled around them over centuries, which is exactly what has happened, and they give the impression not of grandeur but of patience. He stops at what was probably the outer edge of the settlement and records the standard entry log, site access, time, designation, weather conditions. He takes a panoramic sweep with the suit camera, then he walks in. The structures are built from the local stone, a dense reddish-grey material he does not have a mineralogy for yet. That is day three work, sample collection and analysis. The construction method is dry stone masonry, no mortar visible, the blocks fitted together with care. The weathering has softened all the edges. He cannot tell from looking whether the interiors are intact or collapsed. He will need to check each one. He chooses the nearest structure and approaches the entrance. He stops, he measures the opening with his eyes first, the way he always does, estimating before confirming, keeping the habit of his own perception honest against the instruments. The doorway is roughly rectangular, wider than it is tall, which is unusual. He raises his arm with the measuring tool and takes the reading. Height 2 meters 4 cm. He stands very still for a moment. He measures his own height by memory, 1 meter, 89 cm. Standard clearance for a human doorway is generally between 2 meters and 2 meters 10 c, depending on regional convention, accounting for variation in human height with a margin for comfort. 2 meters 4 cm is a standard clearance for a human doorway. He measures the width, 93 cm. He writes this in his field notes and does not write anything else about it yet, because he is not done measuring. The interior of the structure is a single room, partially collapsed on the south wall, but otherwise intact. A second opening in the opposite wall, probably a window. The floor is the native clay, compressed and smoothed in a way that suggests it was worked deliberately. He measures the ceiling height where it is still standing, 2 meters forty. He measures the room dimensions, 4 meters by 6 meters. He notes the window dimensions. 58 cm wide, 42 cm tall, centered on the wall at a height of 1 meter 20 from the floor. Eye level for a seated person. Eye level for a person Elias' height sitting in a standard chair. He goes back outside and stands in what was probably the central space of the settlement. He can see nine structures from where he stands. He picks the next nearest one and walks to it and measures its doorway. Two meters, two centimeters, he measures five more. The doorways range from two meters to two meters eight, all of them within standard clearance, all of them opening onto the interiors at angles that suggest they were designed to admit light in the morning and block it in the afternoon, which is a passive temperature management strategy, which is something a species would develop if it found the afternoon heat uncomfortable, which is something that a species with a human thermal profile would develop. He sits on a stone near the center of the settlement and opens his field notes and writes. Structures appear sized for occupants of approximately human height and build. Standard clearance doorways, seated eye-level windows, passive thermal design consistent with warm-blooded biology in the human range. He pauses, then he writes, No explanation available at this time. He pauses again and writes, Recommend full xenoarchaeological survey prior to any colonization assessment. He looks at what he has written, he looks at the ruins. He has been in this work for eleven years. He has surveyed 14 planets, nine of them flagged for colonization review, four of them currently in various stages of settlement. He has found microbial life on two worlds. He has found fossil evidence of complex marine organisms on one. He has never found anything built. He stands up and walks slowly through the rest of the settlement, measuring as he goes. He is very methodical. He measures every doorway, every window, every room he can access safely. He notes the placement of what may have been hearths, circular depressions in the floors of several structures, stained in ways that suggest sustained heat. He notes that the hearths are positioned against interior walls in a configuration that would allow a person to sit with their back to the wall and face the fire, which is a configuration that a social species would find comfortable. He notes the spacing between structures, wide enough for two people to walk abreast, slightly wider at what were probably main paths through the settlement. He does not find anything written. No carvings, no markings, no inscriptions. He looks carefully. He uses the suit's ultraviolet scan on every surface he can reach. Nothing. He does find in the largest structure at the settlement center, a series of shallow holes in the floor arranged in a pattern he cannot immediately interpret. Not random, not obviously geometric. He photographs them from every angle and takes careful measurements and writes down the spacing and depth of each one. He will look at this for a long time later, probably in the lander. In the transit home. He will probably not figure out what it means. That is all right. That is what the xenoarchaeologists are for. By the time he finishes the site survey, it is late in Marin's afternoon. The sun has moved low enough that his shadow now stretches back toward the lander as if pointing him home. He takes a final panoramic sweep from the settlement's center. He records the closing sight log. He walks back through the ruins toward the basin. At the edge of the settlement, he stops and turns and looks back at it. He has tried, throughout the survey, to remain in the posture of a person taking measurements. He has tried to think in the vocabulary of his work, nominal, with inexpected variants, requires further analysis. Recommend follow-up. This is not dishonesty. This is how the work gets done. The work requires a version of him that can function in the presence of things that do not yet have explanations. But standing at the edge of the settlement in the low afternoon light, looking back at the forty structures that someone built here, someone who made doorways that a person his height could walk through without ducking, someone who positioned windows at the height of a seated person's eyes, someone who made hearths against the walls in the configurations that feel right. He lets himself think what he has been not quite thinking for the past four hours. Someone was here, something that moved through the world at roughly the same scale as a human being, that found roughly the same temperatures comfortable, that wanted perhaps the same things from a fire in a room, warmth and light and a wall at its back. He does not know if they are gone or if they left. He does not know if they came from this planet or arrived here the same way he did. He does not know what the holes in the floor of the central building mean, or if they mean anything at all. He turns back toward the lander. The walk is three kilometers across the flat basin floor, the clay ground firm underfoot, the mat growth rustling in the wind along the basin edge. He walks it carefully, the way he does everything. He is thinking about the risk assessment he will write tonight. Risk to survey personnel. Low, environmental hazards within mission parameters. Xenological risk, unknown, recommended status, hold for full investigation. He is also thinking in the part of his mind that runs parallel to the work and does not write reports about the doorways. About the fact that he walked through all of them without ducking. About the fact that whoever built them measured a body against the stone before they began, and the body they measured was very nearly his. He reaches the lander as the first of Maran's two moons rises over the basin rim, pale and close, making a second shadow that crosses his at an angle. He stands at the top of the ramp for a moment before going in. The ruins are invisible from here, the basin is quiet, the wind has dropped. He goes inside and starts writing. End of episode.
